Welcome! I’m Dr. Alex A. Antoniou, Classicist and Roman Historian. I am currently Lecturer in Classics at the University of Glasgow, having previously been an Associate Researcher of the Faculty of Classics at the University of Oxford, and Stipendiary Lecturer in Learning and Development at St. Hugh’s Oxford. I obtained my DPhil in Ancient History from the University of Oxford in 2022.
I work primarily on the social and religious history of ancient Rome and her provinces, in the Late Republic and Early Empire. My research projects are, and have been focused on:
- Roman priests and priestesses at Rome;
- Virtues and virtue-discourse at Rome;
- The office of the Roman censorship;
- Emperor worship, primarily in Roman Italy;
- Imperialism and ‘identity’;
- Prodigies in the Roman world;
- Ancient epigraphy and numismatics;
- Digital Humanities, principally EpiDoc;

In addition to these research interests, I have given lectures on everything from early Rome to late antiquity, and the quality of my teaching has recently been recognised by a College Teaching Excellence (Early Career) Teaching Award at the University of Glasgow in 2025.
I have recently been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2026), and as a Council Member and Trustee of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies (2026).
